LastMinuteCabs is Changing

Logo_Taxi LastMinuteCabs is changing; for the last three years we have endeavoured to get passengers a good deal when travelling to the airport, city or docks by taxi. We have found that the majority of travellers are looking for an easy to use website, that gives them immediate results. We believe we have found the solution with our new website CompareACab.com. The site requires no registration by passengers and offers an immediate comparison of taxi fares between most major towns in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the airports. Each town and airport has a stand alone page; ie Ashford (Kent) and London Stansted Airport; all the user has to do is select number of passengers travelling and click 'show me prices'. The site then shows a list of taxis registered in the selected area and their prices; contact details are shown as well.

Our aim with the new website CompareACab.com is to help passengers to make an informed choice of which taxi to use when travelling to the airport.

The Fog Light Users Are Back!

001 The nights are drawing in again and unfortunately the fog light drivers are back. After the light evenings with lights not required; we are back in the sorry state of having to contend with idiots driving with fog lights on all the time. The Highway Code states fog lights are to be used in adverse weather conditions and falling snow. To make matters worse a lot of them have only one light working; increasing the dazzling effect. The police could use their powers to stamp it out; by issuing fix penalty fines on the spot (excuse the pun). Good driving is needed by all drivers as the number of vehicles on our roads increases each year; the correct use of fog lights would be a positive move.

Drink More When You Are Driving

001No I'm not being stupid; one of the major causes of lack of concentration and drowsiness is poor hydration. We humans need to maintain hydration of our bodies to be able to work or operate effectively. Drinking fluids is vital, preferably water but any fluid will do; except alcohol. By maintaining our hydration levels we are able to work and concentrate longer; it makes sense when travelling any distance to plan for refreshment breaks. Stopping for 10 - 15 minutes every 90 minutes or so will help keep us fresh mentally, physically and lower stress levels. Next time you stop for the toilet; take on some fluids before getting back in your vehicle. Allowing extra time for any journey will help make the trip more relaxed and enjoyable. It is important to remember that drinking water and soft drinks while driving is not considered good practise; many drivers have found to their cost having been prosecuted for not being in control of their vehicle. Find somewhere safe to stop, either a service area or a lay by, this way you can refresh your body in a secure environment.

Start your holiday from home; get LastMinuteCabs.com to find you a cab. In less than 5 minutes we could be saving you money on that next trip by taxi; go to LastMinuteCabs.com and register now.

Turn off Traffic Lights at Night

001 With all the hot air coming from Government about "Global Warming" etc; it would help if they took the lead. There are a number of things they could do that would have minimal impact on safety; but a huge impact on energy waste reduction. Wedo not need traffic lights to be on 24 hours a day; travel to mainland Europe and you will find lots of traffic lights are switched off every night from around 8pm. They seem to cope well with this scenario; obviously there are certain junctions where it is important that they stay under traffic light control but not all need to be controlled. It is by making small changes that we can accumulate large savings; not to mention the cash savings with the price of electricity climbing.

Broken Headlights Are Really Dangerous

001It's not winter yet and the number of drivers I see with one headlight out is quite staggering. Recently I have had the potentially dangerous experience of meeting vehicles coming towards me with the off-side headlight broken; from a distance these vehicles appear to be motorbikes. Not only is highly dangerous but it is exceedingly selfish; causing other drivers to adjust rapidly at the last minute when the full outline of the vehicle is apparent. It is also unnecessary as for the investment of between £5-£10 will get you a set of spare bulbs from most main dealers or shops like Halfords. Ask yourself this question; is my life worth £10? I think most people will think it is; carry spare bulbs at all times; they take a few minutes to replace. Keep yourself, your passengers and other road users safe at all times; check your lights regularly.

Let's Make Cycling Easier and Safer

001 Governments keep going on about 'Climate Change' and 'Global Warming' and wanting us to reduce our ‘Carbon Footprint’ and hence CO2 emissions. One positive way would be to make cycling safer and tax efficient; currently cyclists have to run the gauntlet of our roads with all the vehicles using them. It would make sense to separate the two; vehicles and cycles don't mix, cyclists are very vulnerable too severe injury or death if hit by a car or truck. The current practise of having cycle lanes on busy roads is dangerous; a one metre strip is not much room when being passed by fast moving vehicles. Some of the inane road marking for cyclists is crazy; with stretches of 10-15 metres marked as cycle lanes and stopping abruptly. It would be better to either build designated cycle routes away from the traffic or to classify some roads as cyclist and resident access only. Another option is to offer tax incentives to people who ride to work; the technology to monitor cyclists is already available to be able to do this. This way we can encourage more people to leave their cars at home and get fitter in the process.

Street Signs and Advertising are Dangerous

001 Why do we need so many street signs? Do you ever ask yourself this question? I know I do. Street signs are meant to help us; but the staggering array of signs one meets on the road nowadays beggars belief. How to get to this church, that library, no Heavy Goods Vehicles, Cyclists and pedestrians only; where the station is; the list goes on. The sad thing is there are over 24 million vehicles on our roads and we need to concentrate now more than ever; but we are constantly being bombarded every day with some new form of information. The latest one of putting speed sensors about 15 feet up a lamp post; is very distracting; even worse is advertising on lamp-posts . It would appear that road safety is secondary; this supposed influx of safety signs are counterproductive; in as much as they distract motorists from looking at the road. The amount of risk in trying to read these signs is quite considerable; every second our eyes are off the road, the greater the chance of an accident. The government and local councils could make our roads safer by getting rid of all this superfluous signing and reducing the amount of distraction for drivers. It is bad enough trying to avoid other vehicles on the road without the additional burden of the drivers not looking at the road properly. Let’s get rid of the signs and in doing so make our roads safer.

But if you really want to read the signs; why not do it from the back of a taxi? Go to LastMinuteCabs.com and register now; in less than 5 minutes we could be saving you money on that next trip by cab. Whether you are travelling from Bath to Birchington or Canterbury to Cheltenham we at LastMinuteCabs.com are confident we can find you a lower fare; register now.

Congestion Charging is Coming to Manchester

001 Congestion charging is coming to Manchester in 2013 according to the latest announcements. The government is spending £3 Billion of our money on improving public transport in Manchester in readiness for the introduction of congestion charging in 2013. It would appear that whenever we have a problem in this country we try to solve it in one way; when with a bit of lateral thinking we could come up with some equally good or better alternative solutions. Why is it that all schools, shops, offices and factories all start work at approximately the same time? In the case of Manchester or any other major town or city why don't we encourage a spread of start times between 7.00am and 10.00am. Is there any real need for shops to open at 9.00; can we get schools in the same location to have at least one hour gap between their start and finishing times; can't offices spread their start times from 7.00 am to 10.00am, thereis still a 5 hour period when they can communicate to everyone. ets try a few of the alternatives before we victimise the motorist yet again.

Traffic Jams out of Nowhere

001   Watching a programme on Channel 4 the other day; I was intrigued by a theory that explained phantom traffic jams. These are traffic jams without any real explanation of what caused them. How many times have you been held up on a motorway? Only to find when you get to the clear road that there was no accident or breakdown to cause the delay. The theory of what causes this phenomenon is this; traffic gets too close together and either a bad manoeuvre or sudden braking by cars at the front of the traffic causes following vehicles to brake. The effect is that cars further back have to brake more sharply; until eventualy they come to a complete stand still; which in turn causes more vehicles to brake and so on; the net effect is gridlock. It would appear the best way to avoid these phantom traffic jams is to leave more space or braking distance between you and the vehicle in front. This is something we can all make an active contribution to; remember the highway code and maintain a good braking distance at all times.

However if you don't want the worry and hassle; let us at LastMinuteCabs.com find you a licensed taxi to drive you to the airport, city or docks. Go to LastMinuteCabs.com and register now; in less than 5 minutes we could be saving you money on that next trip by cab.

HGV Fuel Protests Hit the Streets Again

001The latest protest by hauliers is taking place today; Lorry drivers are fed up with increasing pump prices. The average cost of filling up an HGV has gone up dramatically in the last year; hauliers are now paying an extra £250 per week or £1,000 per month to fill their tanks. The government is doing very nicely from the tax, as it is a percentage of the price and not a fixed rate. The knock on effect will be dearer food, goods and services. The government and the Prime Minister claim to be listening; but obviously not to what is being said by ordinary citizens; enough is enough. Central and local government seem determined to price people off the roads; every chance they get they are after our money. The sad thing is that if they succeed the economy will suffer; with lay-offs and redundancies being back in vogue. The economy is better left alone by meddling politicians who only appear to make things worse. We need a thriving economy that creates jobs, rewards enterprise and encourages everyone to go to work.

Let us worry about fuel prices; get a taxi from LastMinuteCabs.com on your next trip to the airport, city or docks. Whether you are travelling from Bodmin to Broadstairs or from St Austell to Sandwich we believe we can find you a cheaper cab fare. Go to LastMinuteCabs.com and register now!
