The Speed Camera Lottery

The great speed camera lottery continues; depending on where you are caught alters the chance of being prosecuted. The latest accounts from the 38 safety camera partnerships in England and Wales show that £114,000,000 was raised in fines which equates to 1,900,000 motorists being fined and being awarded 3 points on their licences; these were the ones that paid. In all 2.2 million fixed penalty notices were issued. Where you're caught changes the odds of being prosecuted as the list below shows: -

So Avon and Somerset,Surrey and London are the best places for speeding as you have a less tha 50% chance of been fined. The whole system is a scandal as it is an easy form of taxation, if it really were for safety every bridge and gantry on every motorway would have speed cameras.

2 Million Road Tax Dodgers

In an article in the Telegraph Friday, 26th January 2007, according to the Department of Transport there are over 2 million untaxed vehicles on our roads; this is 1 in 15 of the 33 million vehicles on our roads. The worry thing is that 80% of these vehicles have no insurance. This means, that unless you have fully comprehensive insurance, you could end up with a hefty bill if you are involved in a collision with one of these vehicles; even if you are the innocent party. Even more disturbing is in 2005 uninsured drivers were involved in accidents that resulted in 150 deaths and 12,000 injuries; uninsured drivers are 10 times more likely to be involved in hit-and-run crashes. The Department of Transport report revealed there were 1,338,000 unlicensed private cars and vans in 2006 compared with 851,000 in 2004 a 57% increase. A similar story for motor bikes up to 694,000 from 275,000 an increase of 152% and goods vehicles up by 4,000 from 17,000 to 21,000 a 19% increase. The Department estimates it lost £217,000,000 in revenue. I know if I were losing that amount I would do something about it. They are currently working on different schemes which it claims will take 1000,000 untaxed vehicles off the road each year. So as a quick calculation in the last 2 years 910,00 increase in untaxed vehicles less 200,000 removed equals a net increase of 710,000. I think this is what is known as a losing battle. Yet again the law abiders are subsidising the law breakers.

Chaos in the Snow

It's that time of year again; a little snow flurry and the place stops.  Why is it that we cannot drive sensibly in the snow and ice?
