I like nearly 2 million other drivers registered our opposition to road charging through the government's on-line petition system. In return we got a lengthy email from the PM's office virtually discounting our views; with the trite 'there is no real alternative.' It smacks of back door taxation to me, with the government pouring our money down a number of drains eg Iraq and Afghanistan, they need an untapped source of revenue.
The current trials on the proposed system are not proving that successful as the technology loses cars, especially in London. It would be far better to remove the 2.2million untaxed vehicles from our roads first. We could then look at alternatives:-
- Raising the driving age to 21, would immediately cut accident rates.
- Require drivers to have a medical every 2 years to confirm they are fit to drive.
- Drivers to retake the driving test every 5 years.
- Drivers at 70 to have a medical every year and a retake their driving test every 2 years.
These are a few different suggestions of my own you may or may not agree with them; or you may have some ideas of your own to put forward.
