The GMB Union claims plans to axe the AA specialist night patrols is an exercise in cost cutting by its new private equity owners, Permira; resulting in a loss of service for AA's 15 million members. The AA insist that the changes would lead to more staff being available at night, rather than fewer. According to the AA the change will mean six dedicated night-time patrols, all based in London, being merged with the rest of the service. Additional night cover being provided by extending the end of the evening shift from midnight to 2am, with patrols given the opportunity to work overtime later into the night. Other staff being put on standby, only being paid if they have to turn out; local garages will fill the void.
The GMB claims there has been a substantial cut in the number of patrols at a time when the AA has been promoting the service with TV advertising. The Union claims that the AA staff has been cut by 3000 to 7000 jobs. The net result being if you need assistance you may find the responding patrol person has already worked 12 hours.
