Governments keep going on about 'Climate Change' and 'Global Warming' and wanting us to reduce our ‘Carbon Footprint’ and hence CO2 emissions. One positive way would be to make cycling safer and tax efficient; currently cyclists have to run the gauntlet of our roads with all the vehicles using them. It would make sense to separate the two; vehicles and cycles don't mix, cyclists are very vulnerable too severe injury or death if hit by a car or truck. The current practise of having cycle lanes on busy roads is dangerous; a one metre strip is not much room when being passed by fast moving vehicles. Some of the inane road marking for cyclists is crazy; with stretches of 10-15 metres marked as cycle lanes and stopping abruptly. It would be better to either build designated cycle routes away from the traffic or to classify some roads as cyclist and resident access only. Another option is to offer tax incentives to people who ride to work; the technology to monitor cyclists is already available to be able to do this. This way we can encourage more people to leave their cars at home and get fitter in the process.
