Why do we need so many street signs? Do you ever ask yourself this question? I know I do. Street signs are meant to help us; but the staggering array of signs one meets on the road nowadays beggars belief. How to get to this church, that library, no Heavy Goods Vehicles, Cyclists and pedestrians only; where the station is; the list goes on. The sad thing is there are over 24 million vehicles on our roads and we need to concentrate now more than ever; but we are constantly being bombarded every day with some new form of information. The latest one of putting speed sensors about 15 feet up a lamp post; is very distracting; even worse is advertising on lamp-posts . It would appear that road safety is secondary; this supposed influx of safety signs are counterproductive; in as much as they distract motorists from looking at the road. The amount of risk in trying to read these signs is quite considerable; every second our eyes are off the road, the greater the chance of an accident. The government and local councils could make our roads safer by getting rid of all this superfluous signing and reducing the amount of distraction for drivers. It is bad enough trying to avoid other vehicles on the road without the additional burden of the drivers not looking at the road properly. Let’s get rid of the signs and in doing so make our roads safer.
