Speed Cameras at Night on the M25

Driving home from the M25 the other day there were road works being done between the Leatherhead and Reigate junctions. The obligatory 50 mph speed limit was in place and the carriageway was reduced to two lanes. On one of the bridges was a camera set up to monitor vehicles in the overtaking lane; this was being operated by a police car. The assault on motorist's wallets is getting worse; no only do we have to contend with dearer fuel prices but government attempts to catch us speeding. The road works in question were on the bank to the left of the hard shoulder; I believe they are installing more information boards. The amount of protection afforded the work force meant it was perfectly safe to travel at the national speed limit of 70 mph. We seem to be blighted by Health and Safety every where we go; some good old common sense wouldn't go amiss.

M25 Speed Cameras Going Digital

I have just received this email which gives disturbing news about the Variable Speed Limit Cameras from Junction 10 - 15 on the M25

From a friend......... 

     All

     I have just been informed by my dad who works for the Metropolitan
     Police Service (for those of you who didn't know) that as from the
     15th
     February 08 all the Speed Cameras in the Variable Speed Limit section
     of
     The M25 near Heathrow Airport (JCT 10-15) are going digital, and the
     Activation limit is being lowered.

     They are currently the older film type cameras and Set at 90mph when
     The
     Variable Limit Signs are not in operation.

     The new digital cameras are going to be set at the normal speed limit
     +
     10%
     + 2mph (80mph + and you're taking a risk basically) when the signs
     Are
     Not in use I.e. National speed limit. I can't confirm the activation
     Limit
     When the signs are set (variable limits showing) but believe  it
     Would
     Be the same 10% + 2mph of the speed shown by the sign at that time.

Red Lights?

Are Indicators a thing of the Past?

It would appear indicators are a thing of the past; every day whilst driving I am forced to guess which way vehicles are going. Is it asking too much to flick a switch inside the car to let other motorists know when you are changing direction or turning off. It is nearly as dangerous as using a mobile phone whilst driving; other motorists need to know where the car in front of them is going especially at roundabouts. It is always advisable to indicate before any change in direction; this allows vehicles following to either adjust their speed or their line of travel. Remember when turning right on a roundabout it is imperative to indicate; otherwise vehicles travelling from the opposite direction think you are going straight on. Indicate more and make it safer for all of us.

Let's Do Away with Road Tax

Instead of spending millions of pounds on sophisticated cameras to pick up cars without road tax; why not abolish it. Doing away with road tax and keeping fuel tax at it's current rate would be fair all round; cars that use more fuel already pay more tax. We could have a system that shows if a car is insured by having a window sticker; similar to the Australian system. Random checks by police and a punitive car crushing regime for uninsured vehicles; would deter the majority of uninsured drivers.

What are these Cycle Lanes being marked on Roads for?

It would appear that local government has money to burn. Recently I have noticed a spate of Cycle tracks being marked on roads; many of these sections of track are only about 20 metres long. The big problem as I see it is mixing cars and cycles on the same road; it would be far better to separate the two. If the government is serious about encouraging us to look at other forms of transport; it must be safe. On many roads cycles are regularly being overtaken by trucks and buses; frequently these cyclists are 'lost' in the rear view mirrors. Having a line on the road marking a 1 metre track or whatever size it is; with the view of separating traffic is frankly naive. We should invest in completely separate cycle tracks; that are purpose built and well lit; linking places of interest and commerce in all areas. Cycling is only fun and safe if you are away from 1 ton plus vehicles trying to knock you off or maim you.

The Square Overtaking Manoeuvre!

On one of many trips on the M25 and M26 recently I came across the square overtaking manoeuvre; this wonderful move nearly causes an accident every time it is executed. On the M26 I was travelling at a speed a fair bit faster than the inside lane traffic; as I came up to two cars to overtake; the trailing car came straight out at right angles in front of me at a speed approximately 20mph slower than mine and crawled past the other car; then cut back straight across the other car. This is a dangerous practice that happens to often; cars travelling slowly in the inside lane need to allow for the speed of approaching vehicles before they pull out. It is far safer for the car travelling on the inside to brake rather than risk a pile up; just to get in front of a car travelling about 2-3 mph slower than they are.

I have recently experienced how bad a lot of police drivers are; last night on three separate occasions I had police cars suddenly stop in front of me and then turn off without any indication. I find it hard to accept that police officers who are policing us are not policed at all; the driving last night came under the category of driving without due care and attention. Recently I have also had roads blocked by unmanned police cars with the engine still running whilst they attended some 'incident'. It is not acceptable that these officers are virtually above the law; they should be subject to the same driving laws as the rest of us; and follow the 'highway code' at all times.

There are New Speed Cameras on the M20 at Maidstone

It has been confirmed by one of our readers that Speed Cameras are being installed at Maidstone on the M20. He informed us that he had been double flashed whilst passing under one of the gantries. Whether they are actually live yet; we wait to find out; however there are no warning signs up yet. All drivers are warned to be careful in the Maidstone area as it is not worth £60.00 and 3 points to find out if they are live or not. My own view is that it will make congestion worse in the Maidstone area; it would appear that the government has a back door policy of driving motorists off the road.
